Tips To Keep You Safe on the Roads During the Holidays

Off to Grandma’s house you go. The car was packed to the hilt with gifts, candies, and delicious pies. And somehow you even managed to fit the kids in their seats. Unfortunately, like most travelers over the holidays you packed your car so tight the rear view mirror is blocked and clearly seeing out any side windows proves difficult at best. But you feel it’s okay because it’s the holidays and it’s a joyous time.

That assumption would be wrong. And dangerous.

We all love the holidays, even the staff here at the Law Offices of David W. Holub have our offices all decorated up, but sadly, the crash rates over the holidays are the worst. Drivers are very distracted. Cars are loaded up with toys, gifts, bicycles, trays of food which all become projectiles if that vehicle is involved in an accident. According to a recent review by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nearly 25,000 people are killed in auto related accidents between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.

Not only are drivers distracted, they are tired, possibly inebriated, and rushed. Makes a bad combination. One that could lead to injury or death. Which is the opposite of a joyous time.

Here are some tips to keep you and your family members safer on the roads during the holidays.

1) Limit the use of cell phones and hand-held mobile devices while driving, especially at night . Even passengers using cell phones or other devices can cause distractions as those devices cast a light when being used. That light can momentarily blind the driver, which leads to an accident.

2) Avoid consuming anything that might make you drowsy. That means carbs and even meds. Nothing worse than trying to drive when all your body wants to do is sleep.

3) Never drink and drive. Give yourself time. Know your limits. Stop drinking a few hours before you head home.

4) Spend the night if possible. If spending more time with family keeps you alive, do it.

Stay safe over the holidays. Even if you have to spend more time with your family than you planned.

Now, if you or a loved one were injured or involved in an accident, it is critical to consult with an attorney who has extensive trial litigation experience. If your case cannot be settled, it is crucial that your attorney understand how to prepare your case for trial and how to win your case.
